Men’s Health Matters: Prioritising Well-being and Longevity

By Camilla Broster

Men’s health often doesn’t receive the attention it deserves, yet prioritising it is
crucial for a long, fulfilling life. Men tend to visit doctors less frequently than women
and often neglect preventive care, leading to higher risks for certain health
conditions. Addressing common health issues and promoting regular check-ups can
significantly improve men’s overall well-being.

Common Health Concerns

Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death among men. High blood
pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking are major risk factors. Regular check-ups
can help monitor these risks and implement lifestyle changes or medications to
manage them. Men should aim for a heart-healthy diet, regular exercise, and
avoiding tobacco to reduce their risk of heart disease.

Prostate health is another significant concern. Prostate cancer is one of the most
common cancers in men, incidence increasing from 45 years of age. There is no
ideal screening options as yet, but PSA (prostate-specific antigen) monitoring can be
helpful in detecting prostate cancer early when it is most treatable. We tend to focus
on change of urinary symptoms too. Discussing screening options with a healthcare
provider is crucial for early detection and management.

Mental health is often overlooked but is equally important. Men are less likely to seek
help for mental health issues, leading to untreated conditions like depression and
anxiety. Creating an environment where men feel comfortable discussing their
mental health and seeking professional help is vital. Encouraging open
conversations about mental health can reduce stigma and promote mental well-
being.

Importance of Preventive Care

Preventive care is essential for early detection and management of health issues.
Regular physical exams can identify potential problems before they become serious.
Vaccinations, blood pressure checks, cholesterol tests, and diabetes screenings are
critical components of preventive care. Men should establish a relationship with a

primary care provider to ensure they receive appropriate screenings and follow-up
care.

Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Adopting a healthy lifestyle is fundamental to preventing many health issues. A
balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins supports
overall health. Regular physical activity helps maintain a healthy weight, reduces
stress, and lowers the risk of chronic diseases. Aim for at least 150 minutes of
moderate-intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise each week.

Limiting alcohol intake and avoiding smoking are also crucial. Excessive alcohol
consumption can lead to liver disease, high blood pressure, and other health
problems. Smoking is a significant risk factor for many diseases, including cancer
and heart disease. Seeking support to quit smoking can vastly improve health
outcomes.

Conclusion

Men’s health is multifaceted, encompassing physical, mental, and emotional well-
being. Regular check-ups, preventive care, and healthy lifestyle choices are the
pillars of good health. By prioritising these aspects, men can lead longer, healthier
lives. It’s never too late to start taking proactive steps toward better health, and small
changes can make a significant difference. Encouraging men to take charge of their
health today ensures a brighter, healthier future.
