What is prostate screening?

Prostate screening helps assess your risk of prostate problems, including cancer, before symptoms appear. At Enigma Healthcare, screening typically includes a PSA blood test and, where appropriate and with your consent, a prostate (DRE) examination. Screening is not a diagnosis, but it can help identify who may benefit from further investigation.

Who is it for?

Screening can be especially helpful if you are:

  • 40+ and want a proactive health check
  • Have a family history of prostate cancer in a close relative (brother or father)
  • Are of Black ethnicity (higher lifetime risk)
  • You may want a clinical assessment if you have urinary symptoms such as frequent urination (especially at night), urgency, difficulty starting, a weak or interrupted stream, and dribbling after urination.

If you have had a normal PSA result then yearly is adequate, unless you have concerns about changes to your urinary habits.

A high PSA could mean you have cancer, but PSA can also be raised by having an enlarged prostate, an infection, exercise, or ejaculation. So, in this case you would be referred to a Urologist for evaluation (most common first step is an MRI).

If you have had a normal PSA result then yearly is adequate, unless you have concerns about changes to your urinary habits.

Yes, absolutely there are things that can cause your PSA result to be higher than normal levels.

For every 100 men with a raised PSA level, 85 do not have prostate cancer.

Some of the common causes for elevated PSA include age, prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and urinary tract infections. Having a medical procedure, recent ejaculation, prostate stimulation or recent vigorous exercise can increase PSA levels.

No fasting is usually required. In general, certain temporary factors can influence PSA levels (e.g., recent vigorous cycling, ejaculation, prostate infection). We’ll let you know how to prepare so your result is as reliable as possible.

Not always. Your GP will discuss whether it’s helpful in your case. It’s only performed with your consent.

No. PSA helps assess risk. If results or your examination suggest further checks are needed, we’ll guide you on the next steps.

Many men choose a baseline PSA and risk review from 40+. We’ll help you weigh up the pros and cons for an informed choice.
