The Role of Lifestyle Medicine in the Management of Menopause

9th October, 2025

Menopause Awareness Day is an important reminder of the need to support women through one of life’s major transitions. Enigma Healthcare’s Menopause Clinic is run by Dr Julia Dancy, an experienced GP and accredited specialist in menopause care, who believes that empowering women with knowledge and personalised care is the key to a healthy and fulfilling midlife. While medical treatments such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can play an important role, lifestyle medicine is equally powerful in shaping long-term health and wellbeing.

What is Lifestyle Medicine?

Lifestyle medicine is a medical specialty that focuses on preventing, managing, and even reversing chronic conditions by making evidence-based changes to daily habits.  It places emphasis on six key pillars:

  • Nutrition
  • Physical activity
  • Sleep
  • Stress management
  • Healthy relationships
  • Avoidance of harmful substances

Rather than treating symptoms alone, lifestyle medicine looks at the whole person—how daily choices, environment, and behaviour affect health.

Holistic Assessments at Enigma Healthcare

At the Enigma Healthcare Menopause Clinic, we integrate lifestyle medicine into every assessment. Our holistic approach goes beyond blood tests and symptom tracking—we explore the bigger picture of each woman’s life. This means discussing diet, movement, sleep patterns, stress levels, work/life balance and social connections alongside medical history and treatment options.

By combining conventional medical expertise with lifestyle medicine, we create tailored plans that support both immediate symptom relief and long-term health goals, such as reducing risks of heart disease, osteoporosis, and cognitive decline—all of which become more relevant after menopause.

Lifestyle Changes to Support a Healthy Menopause Transition

Here are some examples of practical lifestyle strategies we encourage our patients to explore:

  • Balanced Nutrition:  Prioritising a diet rich in whole foods, fibre, calcium, vitamin D, and phytoestrogens (found in foods like soy, flaxseed, and chickpeas) can support bone health, heart health, and hormone balance.
  • Regular Movement:  Strength training helps protect bone density, while aerobic activity supports cardiovascular health and helps manage weight. Gentle practices like yoga or Pilates can also ease stress and improve flexibility.
  • Quality Sleep:  Creating a calming bedtime routine, reducing caffeine and screen time, and addressing night sweats or insomnia can significantly improve wellbeing.
  • Stress Management:  Mindfulness, meditation, or simple breathing exercises reduce cortisol levels, which in turn helps with mood, weight management, and hot flushes.
  • Connection & Support:  Maintaining strong social ties and seeking emotional support can buffer the psychological impact of menopause and improve resilience.
  • Reducing Alcohol & Smoking:  Avoiding or cutting down on these habits supports hormone balance, bone strength, and cardiovascular health.

Our Commitment

At Enigma Healthcare, we recognise that every woman’s menopause journey is unique. By incorporating lifestyle medicine into our assessments and care pathways, we ensure that each patient receives a personalised plan that empowers them to feel their best during and beyond the menopause transition.
