Dr Phil Clelland is a Consultant in Sports and Exercise Medicine who leads the musculoskeletal (MSK) and sports medicine clinic at Enigma Healthcare in Tarporley. He assesses and treats problems affecting the muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments, from sports injuries to long-standing joint pain and arthritis.
In the NHS, Dr Clelland is a Consultant in Musculoskeletal Medicine at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry, a specialist orthopaedic hospital serving patients from Shropshire, Cheshire, Wales and the Midlands. He has held this post since 2019, assessing and managing a wide range of bone, joint and soft tissue conditions.
He also works in elite sport. He is lead doctor for Manchester City Women’s Football Club, a multisport physician for the English Institute of Sport and team doctor for the EF Pro Cycling team. He has previously been Chief Medical Officer for British Para-Swimming and club doctor for Liverpool Women’s FC.
Dr Clelland is trained in diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound and uses it during his clinic appointments. This allows him to look at the injured or painful area in real time, helping him reach an accurate diagnosis at your first visit. Where it is appropriate, he can also use ultrasound to guide therapeutic injections precisely into a joint, tendon sheath or bursa.
He graduated in medicine from the University of Leeds. He trained and practised as a GP and completed postgraduate training in internal medicine before specialist training in Sport, Exercise and Musculoskeletal Medicine. He received an award for his performance in the Sports and Exercise Medicine consultant examinations, and a distinction in his Postgraduate Certificate in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound.
His background in general practice means he looks at the whole person, not just the injury. He has contributed to Moving Medicine, a national physical activity resource for clinicians, including work on falls and frailty, and has co-authored a chapter on orthopaedics.
Dr Clelland sees patients of all ages and activity levels, from people who want to get back to walking without pain to competitive athletes. His aim is to help each person stay active, whatever their level or goals, because of how much this matters to overall health and wellbeing.
If your assessment shows that you may need surgery, Dr Clelland can refer you to an orthopaedic surgeon and Enigma Healthcare will support you with the next steps.
