Private Hysteroscopy Procedure

A hysteroscopy is a simple procedure that helps diagnose and treat conditions affecting the womb (uterus).

Investigation and treatment for abnormal bleeding — without the long wait

A hysteroscopy lets our Consultant Gynaecologist look directly inside your womb to help diagnose — and, where possible, treat — the cause of symptoms such as heavy, irregular or unexpected bleeding, often in a single appointment — though occasionally further tests or a further procedure may be needed.

Carried out gently under local anaesthetic at our Tarporley clinic, it’s a thorough, reassuring way to help get to the bottom of your symptoms close to home — whether you’re here for general gynaecology reasons or as part of your fertility journey. You don’t need a GP referral; you can come straight to us.

Based in Tarporley, we welcome patients from across Cheshire — including Chester, Warrington, Northwich, Nantwich, Crewe and Stoke-on-Trent.

What is a hysteroscopy?

A hysteroscopy is a procedure that uses a thin, telescope-like camera — called a hysteroscope — to examine the inside of your womb (uterus). It’s one of the most accurate ways to investigate abnormal bleeding and to identify polyps, fibroids and other changes to the womb lining.

Where appropriate, small problems can be treated as part of your care. Your hysteroscopy usually takes place within two weeks of your initial consultation.

Your appointment includes:

✓A consultation with Prof Otify to discuss your symptoms
✓A direct, detailed look inside the womb with a fine hysteroscope
✓Removal of small polyps or a biopsy where clinically appropriate
✓Care given gently under local anaesthetic
✓A clear explanation of findings and next steps before you leave

Every hysteroscopy at Enigma Healthcare is carried out personally by our Consultant Gynaecologist, Prof Mohamed Otify.

What if it's best not to continue on the day?

Because your procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, there’s a small chance Prof Otify may feel it’s best not to continue on the day — for example, if a polyp or fibroid turns out to be larger than expected, or if you’re finding it too uncomfortable.

If that happens, we’d arrange for the procedure to take place under general anaesthetic at another location instead, and Prof Otify will talk you through this on the day, should it come up.

Please note that if your consultant feels it’s best not to continue, a partial charge will apply. This simply reflects the time and care involved — never a penalty — and everything will be explained clearly.

When a hysteroscopy may not be right for you

A hysteroscopy isn’t suitable if you are pregnant or think you might be, or if you have an active pelvic or vaginal infection. If your symptoms need urgent attention, please contact your GP or NHS 111; in a medical emergency, call 999 immediately.

If you’re not sure, book an initial consultation and Prof Otify will advise on the safest, most appropriate next step for you.

Frequently asked questions

No. Enigma Healthcare is self-referral friendly, so you can come straight to us and book an initial consultation with Prof Otify without a GP referral. If you do have previous records or notes, it helps to bring them along.

Your hysteroscopy is carried out gently under local anaesthetic at our Tarporley clinic. Most patients feel only mild, period-like cramping. Prof Otify will explain each step as he goes, and you are always in control — if you find it too uncomfortable, he can stop.

The procedure itself usually takes 30–45 minutes. We’d suggest planning to be with us for up to 1.5 hours in total, allowing time to settle in beforehand and rest briefly afterwards.

We recommend bringing someone with you who can keep you company and take you home afterwards, so you can rest and recover comfortably.

An initial consultation is £250, and the hysteroscopy procedure is £2,200 (a £200 deposit secures your booking and comes off the total). A follow-up appointment, if needed, is £200. Any additional scans are charged separately, and you’ll receive a full, clear pricing sheet at your consultation. Prices accurate as of October 2026.

Yes. A hysteroscopy is often used to assess the womb cavity before IVF or other fertility treatment. You don’t need to book separately — just let us know at your consultation. You can also learn more on our dedicated fertility services page.

If any tissue is taken during your procedure, it’s sent to the lab for analysis. Results are usually back within 7–10 working days, and we’ll be in touch to arrange a follow-up if you’d like to discuss them.

Occasionally Prof Otify may feel it’s best not to continue under local anaesthetic — for example, if a polyp or fibroid is larger than expected. If so, we’d arrange for the procedure to take place under general anaesthetic elsewhere, and he’ll talk you through it on the day. Please note that a partial charge would apply in this case, reflecting the time and care involved.
