Frequently asked questions

What is menopause?
Menopause is officially reached when you’ve gone 12 consecutive months without a period, marking the end of your natural reproductive years. It’s caused by a natural decline in reproductive hormones, typically happening between the ages of 45 and 55, though it can happen earlier.
What is perimenopause, and how is it different from menopause?
Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause, when hormone levels begin to fluctuate and symptoms like irregular periods, hot flushes and mood changes often start. It can last from a few months to several years before periods stop completely and menopause itself is reached.
What does postmenopausal mean?
Postmenopausal refers to the stage of life after menopause has been reached — from 12 months after your last period onwards. Many menopause symptoms can continue into this stage, and ongoing hormone support may still be appropriate.
How do I know if I’m perimenopausal or menopausal?
The clearest sign is your periods: irregular but still present periods usually indicate perimenopause, while 12 consecutive months without a period marks menopause. Blood tests can also help assess hormone levels, particularly if symptoms start earlier than expected.
How can I manage my menopause symptoms?
Options range from hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to lifestyle and nutritional changes, depending on your symptoms, health history and personal preference. A menopause specialist can talk you through what’s likely to help most in your individual case.
What is HRT, and is it safe?
HRT (hormone replacement therapy) replaces the oestrogen, and often progesterone, that your body produces less of during perimenopause and menopause. For most women, the benefits of HRT outweigh the risks, though suitability depends on individual health history — this is something our specialists assess and discuss with you directly.
Do I need a GP referral to see a menopause specialist privately?
No — you can book directly with our Menopause Clinic without a GP referral.
How long does a menopause consultation take?
Our initial consultations are longer than a typical NHS appointment, giving you proper time to discuss your symptoms and concerns, rather than a rushed 10-minute slot.
How much does private menopause treatment cost in Cheshire?
Please see our current pricing, or contact our team for full details. Pricing is clear and fixed with no hidden charges.
What’s the difference between a menopause clinic and my NHS GP?
A private menopause clinic typically offers longer consultations, more in-depth hormone testing, and continuity with a specialist who has a particular interest in menopause care, compared with a standard, time-limited NHS GP appointment. Many patients come to us after feeling their NHS options were limited or their symptoms weren’t fully addressed.
